Abstractions

Within the urban environment there are always places of fragile beauty, light, texture, form and narrative. Here I’m looking to encapsulate the essence of the architecture by concentrating on slivers of buildings, exploring the detail, light, shadow and geometry as well as probing into hidden or neglected views.

Similarly within the natural world the grand landscapes can be stripped down in their constituent parts, finding beauty in the small details and patterns that abound.

I am trying to replicate the eye of a child looking at things for the first time and letting my imagination run free. In this way I can begin to see different symbols, views and stories all around me. Looking obliquely, out of the periphery of my vision in a sort of sideways glance to catch those moments of heightened awareness. I’m looking at the edges, junctions, around hidden corners, up nooks and crannies, the mundane places where people rarely look.

I’m not  …walking around buildings at a respectful distance like policemen on their beat flashing lanterns on the impeccably obvious. (Trevor Morton Shand)
