Summer in the City

Through photography I am part of that huge flow of humanity, workers, tourists and inhabitants that criss-cross London in search of spectacle, safe havens, excitement or just playing out the daily commute to work. In fact I’m part of everyday life of this city which like a sentient being responds to the stimuli of external forces.

These photographs represent my “imagined” city in the summer as well as the city imagined by all that pass though it, many cities and as multitudinous as our imaginations. It is as complex as our detailed knowledge of it or as sparse as our first impressions and everything in between. All versions are valid, the city is not just bricks and mortar but a dream, perhaps nightmare, that our consciousness, memory and experiences bring to it.

The city in our actual experience is at the same time an actual existing physical environment, and a city in a novel, a film, a photograph, a city seen on television, a city in a comic strip, a city in a pie chart and so on. (Burgin)
